PRIMARY FUNCTION The Floater will perform quality team-based patient care under the direct supervision of a clinician for both clinical and administrative functions to promote health and wellness in a safe and friendly environment. Supports clinician and care management teams in assessing, maintaining chronic disease management, examining, and treating the pediatric patient population. The Laboratory Medical Assistant Floater is responsible for performing all laboratory testing procedures and phlebotomy, including venipuncture, finger sticks, and heel sticks. This floating employee will be working in various offices to support in either the MA role or a dedicated Lab station. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES This list may not include all the duties that may be assigned. 1. Performs laboratory testing procedures in Chemistry, Hematology, Urinalysis, Serology and Spirometry. 2. Reports laboratory results to a healthcare clinician. Alerts the healthcare clinician of any critical or out-of-range values and documents critical reports. 3. Performs phlebotomy, including venipuncture, finger sticks, and heel sticks. 4. Prepares specimens for reference lab send-outs, including labeling, resulting, and billing information. 5. Performs and documents daily/weekly/monthly quality control, including instrument maintenance. 6. Perform and document the patient’s intake vitals, including, but are limited to, height, weight, temperature, blood pressure, pulse, and respiration rate; repeat and notify the clinician of any abnormal findings. 7. Interview the patient based on age appropriateness and/or specialty needs with accurate documentation and update medical records to include chief complaint, current medications with drug name, dosing, route, medication and food allergies with reaction and severity, vaccine, medical, surgical, family, social histories, any barriers to care and home status. 8. Obtain necessary medical records, consultation notes, hospital inpatient and/or ED discharge records, diagnostic and laboratory results for clinician review, and treatment follow-up as needed. 9. Prepares the patient for clinician examination, ensuring clinician orders are performed and accurately documented. 10. Performs with clinician supervision and assists clinicians in necessary age-appropriate vision, hearing screenings, electrocardiograms with repeat as needed, suture removal, ear lavages, urine catheterization, ear-piercing, wound care, specialty procedures, and emergency response with proper clinician supervision. 11. Perform and document vaccine and medication reconciliation with patient and state registry; provide written vaccine information statements and education of patients/parents prior to vaccine and medication administration. 12. Perform proper patient identifiers, buddy process validation as per policies, and perform proper vaccine and medication administration to include intramuscular, intradermal, and subcutaneous injections with post-observation. 13. Completes patient follow-up and tasks assigned to meet patient needs, including, but not limited to answering phones, handling correspondence, prescription refill requests, providing the clinician with necessary information as needed, obtaining medication preauthorization, assisting with patient referrals, patient form completion to include DME, therapy, school clearance, sports and medication forms, arrange home, hospital care, procedures and follow-up appointments, etc. 14. Able to travel, float, and adapt to a flexible location schedule. QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION: • Minimum High School Diploma or equivalent required. EXPERIENCE: • Minimum 1 year of experience in a healthcare setting required. LICENSURE / CERTIFICATION • MA Diploma / Certification required OR a minimum of 3 years MA experience will commensurate Diploma / Certification requirements. • Active BLS certification required. • Active & valid driver's license required. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES • Knowledge of laboratory quality control requirements • Knowledge of basic medical terminology • Knowledge of universal precaution procedures in medical safety practices • Phlebotomy skills • Ability to communicate and maintain effective working relationships with patients, employees, and the public. • Ability to assess emergencies and act accordingly. VMB PCTs can also be assigned to provide 1:1 hands-on patient care on any inpatient unit. • Participate in shift report with outgoing and oncoming staff, reviewing patient information, safety concerns, and observed behaviors. • Maintain continuous visual observation of assigned patients utilizing a video monitoring system. • Utilize video monitoring technology and AI-assisted algorithms to identify patients at risk for falls and other safety events and promptly escalate concerns to clinical staff. • Verbally redirect patients through a two-way audio communication system, communicate with patients within scope of practice, answer questions as appropriate, and provide excellent customer service while demonstrating professionalism, compassion, and courtesy at all times. • Immediately notify clinical staff when patient assistance is required or when a patient safety concern is identified. • Complete hourly patient observation documentation in Epic, including patient status, behaviors, interventions, notifications, and other relevant observations in accordance with established guidelines. • Accurately document patient observations, safety concerns, care team notifications, and monitoring interventions within the electronic medical record. • Collaborate with nursing staff and other members of the healthcare team to promote a safe patient care environment. • Demonstrate strong computer, communication, critical thinking, and multitasking skills while monitoring multiple patients simultaneously. • May be assigned to provide 1:1 hands-on patient care on inpatient units as needed. • Requires extended periods of sitting while observing patients through video monitoring technology or while providing direct patient observation. • Orientation consists of 4+ weeks of Patient Care Technician training alongside a PCT preceptor with a full patient assignment, followed by 2+ weeks of Video Monitor Bank training. • Participates actively as a member of the interdisciplinary patient care team. For those responsible for the following departments, effective 07/01/2018, all current employees are required to have STABLE by 07/01/2019. New hires and transfers are required to have STABLE within 6 months of hire or transfer. Effective July 1, 2018, existing employees have until December 31, 2018 to obtain the following life support certifications based on their assigned unit. Effective January 1, 2015, all new hires or transfers must have a professional certification within two years of hire or transfer. For certifications that require a specified number of cases or hours worked within the specialty, the certification must be applied for once the case/time requirement has been met, and the certification must be obtained within one year of the requirement having been met (e.g. oncology, chemotherapy, diabetes education). : Required Experience: 3-5 years - Practicing RN in acute care.
