Construction Controller

HuGus Group | Jacksonville, FL 32224

*Build the accounting function. Don't just run it.* HuGus Group is a Jacksonville-based construction company in a high-growth phase, with recently awarded federal and military construction contracts. Controller is a newly created position. Reporting directly to the CFO, you will own day-to-day accounting while designing the systems, processes, and internal controls that support rapid revenue growth and stand up to government contract audit scrutiny. You will be the company's technical authority on construction revenue recognition, job cost accounting, and federal contract compliance. This is a hands-on, working Controller role. You will do the accounting and build the process at the same time. If you want a seat where the infrastructure is already in place, this is not that job. If you have wanted the chance to build a construction accounting function correctly from the start, and then grow a team around it, this is that job. *What you'll do* * Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close, and produce GAAP financial statements and reporting packages for the CFO, ownership, surety, and lending partners * Run job cost accounting and prepare the monthly work-in-progress (WIP) schedule, recognizing revenue under ASC 606 using percentage-of-completion * Analyze job profitability, cost-to-complete, and over/under billings — and surface margin erosion early enough that something can be done about it * Build and maintain an accounting system consistent with FAR Part 31 cost principles, DFARS requirements, and DCAA expectations, including direct/indirect cost segregation, unallowable cost identification, and indirect rate development * Serve as the financial point of contact for DCAA and DCMA, including pre-award accounting system surveys (SF 1408) * Prepare and submit progress billings ( AIA G702/G703 pay applications and federal invoicing through WAWF within PIEE) and manage retainage, lien waivers, accounts receivable, and collections * Oversee accounts payable, subcontractor pay application review, subcontractor compliance documentation, and 1099 reporting * Oversee payroll, certified payroll reporting under the Davis-Bacon Act (Form WH-347), and labor burden allocation to jobs * Write the accounting policies, procedures, and desk-level work instructions, and establish segregation of duties appropriate to the team today and as it grows * Lead the evaluation, selection, and implementation of construction ERP and job cost software * Partner with the external CPA firm, surety, bank, and insurance carriers on audits, bonding capacity, and renewals *What you bring* * Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a closely related field * Five or more years of progressive accounting experience, including at least two in a Controller, Assistant Controller, or senior accounting leadership role * Construction industry accounting experience: job costing, WIP schedules, percentage-of-completion revenue recognition, AIA billing, and retainage * Working knowledge of U.S. GAAP, including ASC 606 as applied to construction contracts * Experience with construction or job-cost ERP systems * Advanced Microsoft Excel skills * Ability to successfully complete a background check *A CPA is not required for this role. *We are hiring for construction and federal contract accounting depth and for the willingness to build something — not for a credential. *What would set you apart* * Federal government contract accounting: FAR/DFARS cost principles, DCAA-compliant accounting systems, indirect rate development, incurred cost submissions * Certified payroll and Davis-Bacon Act reporting experience * Experience building an accounting function from the ground up in a startup or high-growth environment * Familiarity with WAWF/PIEE, SAM.gov, and federal invoicing workflows * Experience supporting surety and bonding relationships *What we offer* * $100,000 – $120,000 per year, depending on experience * Group medical, dental, and vision coverage * 401(k) with profit sharing and match * A ground-floor seat at a company with a growing federal contract backlog *The details* * Full-time, exempt * On-site in Jacksonville, Florida (this position is not remote or hybrid) * Occasional travel to active job sites and project offices (less than 10%) * Work is primarily performed in an office environment with periodic visits to active construction sites, which require personal protective equipment and the ability to navigate uneven terrain and active work areas. The role involves extended periods of computer and desk work and occasional lifting of items up to 20 pounds. The impact you'll make Behind every credit card account opened through a Mission Lane sponsor bank, including Mission Lane Bank, N.A. (Proposed), is our promise to protect it as carefully as the customer would themselves. It has to hold up against people actively trying to abuse the system. The Senior Manager, AML/BSA Officer is who makes sure it keeps working. You'll own the execution of the AML/BSA Program from day one. This is a build role: you'll be establishing Mission Lane's second-line AML/BSA function as our bank charter comes online. This is a step change from where we are today. You can turn dense regulatory requirements into guidance the business can actually act on. You know how to be the person asking the hard question, in a way that builds trust instead of friction. You're motivated by standing up a program from the ground up, not by running one that already exists. Minimum Qualifications 5+ years of AML/BSA experience, including 3+ years administering AML/BSA programs and interacting directly with regulators Active CAMS certification Strong knowledge of AML/BSA laws and regulations and financial services regulatory compliance frameworks, including second-line oversight and effective challenge expectations Proven ability to independently manage investigations and SAR filings Experience managing and developing a team of compliance or risk professionals Strong written and verbal communication skills, including experience delivering executive-level reporting and presentations Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, highly regulated environment Able to work remote, with required travel as needed, approximately ~6+ times per year Preferred Qualifications Experience standing up or maturing an AML/BSA program at a de novo bank or newly chartered institution Experience in a credit card or consumer lending environment Familiarity with data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau) for regulatory and Board reporting Experience supporting OFAC or broader financial crimes programs in addition to AML/BSA Compensation: Annual full-time starting base salary range: $140,000-$165,000 This role is eligible for additional compensation in the forms of participation in our annual incentive and equity programs.
