Stephanie K. Marketing Manager, Fashion Industry
Both my husband and I moved to Jacksonville for work. Sean, a Flight Officer in the United States Navy, was re-stationed from Pensacola and I moved territories for my job as a Sales and Marketing Manager. We were excited for a change of scenery, the opportunity to meet new people, more shopping options, and professional sports teams.
The one thing that’s brought Sean and me closer and cemented our love for this city is volunteering together. I serve as the Board President of the Down Syndrome Association of Jacksonville (DSAJ) and get to participate in the many fabulous events throughout the year. We’ve been fortunate to meet leaders and volunteers from other organizations and make it a point to help when we can. I am in love with the service-oriented heart this city has toward its residents. Everyone comes together to try their best to make Jacksonville a better place to live every day. I truly believe you won't find another large city across the country with the distinct "small town" vibe, where there’s always someone willing to help out and give back.
If you don’t have the time to commit to one organization make sure you at least attend one of the many charity events that take place around the city. A few of my favorites are The Jay Fund Wine Gala, Cathedral Arts Project’s Spring for the Arts, The Women’s Board of Wolfson Children’s Hospital’s Arts and Antiques Show, and of course you can’t forget the DSAJ Buddy Walk.
There’s Always Something To Do In JAX
My absolute favorite thing about JAX is the music scene. The venues do an outstanding job of bringing in talented artists consistently. It's not out of the ordinary to see us at multiple concerts in a week’s time. The Florida Theatre is hands down our favorite place to see a show. It’s a unique venue with so much history and cultural significance that when I meet someone that has never heard of it, I insist they check it out.
No matter what event you attend, grab a bite first! We have our favorite local spots in each part of town:
• San Marco – bb’s and Maple Street Biscuit Company
• Town Center – Moxie Kitchen + Cocktails and M Shack
• Beaches – The Flying Iguana and Whit's Frozen Custard
• Downtown – Candy Apple Café/Sweet Pete’s Candy and Burrito Gallery
What Are You Waiting For?
Come visit! We'll show you around. The best advice we can offer is to make a list of needs, wants, and deal breakers so that you ensure you move to the part of town that suits you best. I've met so many people that moved to one side of town and stayed there. Explore the city! Break out of your comfort zone - there are amazing things to do all around town if you’re willing to venture outside of your "norm."
Life here is all about putting in what you want to get back. JAX is now our forever home.
