Before moving from Chicago, my family had never heard of JAX. After my husband was offered a great job opportunity, we decided to take the plunge. Our friends and family were skeptical of our move, but the idea of living some place warm near the ocean provided an air of excitement and adventure we were looking for. I had no idea what was in store for us but needless to say my husband, our boys and I are in love with this town.
Windy City to Sunshine State
My family has lived in Chicago our entire lives, so coming to Jacksonville was especially pleasant in the winter months for us. With an average of 220 days of sunshine and our close proximity to the ocean, JAX offers so many activities you can’t find in Chicago. From morning walks watching the sunrise and yoga on the beach to year-round festivals like Veg Fest and World of Nations Celebration, there’s always somewhere to go and enjoy the outdoors. Make sure you catch the annual Jacksonville Sea & Sky Air Show and The Players Championship, too. Living on the First Coast is an adventure all the time.
Living in Northeast Florida is such an asset for weekend getaways. My family can take a “staycation” to a number of beautiful towns, from historic St. Augustine to Amelia Island. Places we had only dreamed of visiting one day are now a reality. Here’s a few of my favorites:
- Greyfield Inn – As the sole commercial establishment on Cumberland Island, I took my husband for our anniversary and we enjoyed horseback rides on the beach, a boat tour, local flavor and a rich history of the Carnegie family.
- One Ocean Resort – Overlooking the ocean in Atlantic Beach, I gathered friends and family to celebrate my husband's surprise birthday. It was an unforgettable night and a great location for a special party.
- Ritz-Carlton Amelia Island – So many memories have been made at this resort. From a surprise Mother’s Day spa getaway and dining experience with my Chicago girlfriends at Salt to a New Year's Eve Black Tie affair with my husband where we watched the fireworks by the water, it’s truly a unique and beautiful place to escape.
Located in Ponte Vedra, Nocatee is one of the best master-planned communities in America. After relocating we decided to build a home in this community and fell in love. We are just a few minutes away from pristine beaches, golf courses, shopping centers and major airports in downtown Jacksonville and St. Augustine. We have met so many wonderful people in Jacksonville and feel truly blessed for their friendship. After getting settled, I began hosting block parties and monthly potlucks in doing so, introduced neighbors to ethnic cuisine and learning about different cultures. I love entertaining other families in our home – it’s a great way to develop friendships, stay connected and learn new things about the area. We love every minute of our time here. I have nothing but praise for this town and its beauty.
